Shimla's centre is compact and largely pedestrian. The Ridge and Mall Road form the spine of the town, with most of the colonial-era architecture, shops and eating places within walking distance of each other.
Getting around
Shimla is about 115 km from Chandigarh, usually a three to four hour drive. The narrow-gauge Kalka–Shimla railway, a UNESCO World Heritage line, is a slower but scenic alternative. Vehicles are restricted on the Mall and the Ridge, so central sightseeing is done on foot.
When to visit
March to June is the main season, with mild days and the town at its busiest. December to February brings cold weather and the possibility of snow. July to September is the monsoon, when landslides can affect hill roads.
Good to know
The Ridge and Mall Road sit at roughly 2,200 m. Walking between sights involves steep gradients, which is worth factoring in for older travellers or anyone arriving straight from the plains.
