If Gulmarg and Pahalgam feel busy, Doodhpathri and Yusmarg offer the opposite. Both lie in the Pir Panjal south-west of Srinagar, within about two hours' drive, and both are meadow-and-forest day trips rather than sightseeing destinations. People come to sit, walk, eat a picnic and let the day go slowly.
Doodhpathri
The name means "valley of milk", from the creamy look of the Shaliganga stream as it tumbles over rocks. The meadow lies about 45 km from Srinagar in Budgam district, set between pine slopes and open grassland where shepherds graze their flocks in summer. A gentle trail follows the stream, and horses and picnic spots are scattered across the meadow.
Doodhpathri is at its best from May to October. In winter it is under snow and is rarely accessible. The final approach is a rough road, and outside vehicles may need local transfers on some stretches. After a period when several meadows in Kashmir were closed for security reasons, Doodhpathri and Yusmarg were among the destinations the administration reopened in early 2026. Conditions can change, so we confirm status close to your dates.
Yusmarg
Yusmarg, or "meadow of Jesus", is a smaller grassy bowl surrounded by pine forest, about 45 km from Srinagar near Budgam. It is calm and green, with a small stream, picnic spots and easy walking. A trek leads up to Nilnag lake, a clear mountain pool, and the setting suits families who want a peaceful picnic away from crowds. It is good in spring and early summer, and attractive in autumn too.
Which one should you choose?
- Pick Doodhpathri if you want wide open meadow and a river walk, and have a full day.
- Pick Yusmarg if you have half a day, or travel with small children or elders who prefer gentle terrain.
- Skip both if you only have three days; Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Srinagar deliver more per hour.
Practical notes
- Carry your own food and water; facilities are limited.
- Mobile coverage is patchy.
- Carry cash for ponies and local vehicle fees.
- Leave early to avoid afternoon clouds, and return before dark; roads are narrow.
- Remember that road conditions vary with rain.
Getting there and timing the day
The road to Doodhpathri leaves the Srinagar to Budgam route and climbs through Khag, with the final stretch narrow and sometimes rough after rain. Allow around two hours each way and leave by 8 am; afternoon cloud and the long drive back make late starts frustrating. Yusmarg is about the same distance but the road is generally easier, so it works as a half-day if you are short on time.
On arrival, the typical rhythm is a slow walk along the stream, a picnic (many visitors carry their own or buy simple snacks and tea from stalls), and a pony ride across the meadow if children want one. Ponies and local transfers are priced locally and paid on the spot. Nobody here is in a hurry, and the meadow feels best when you are not either.
Who these meadows suit, and who they do not
They suit families who like open space, couples who want a quiet afternoon, photographers who enjoy soft light on grass and pines, and anyone who has already done the big-name stops and wants a gentler contrast. They suit people who are happy with simple facilities: toilets are basic, food is limited and there is little to do beyond walking and sitting.
They do not suit travellers who want a packed sightseeing schedule, who are in Kashmir for fewer than four days, or who need guaranteed access in winter. Snow closes the Doodhpathri road for months, and rain can make either meadow muddy and slippery.
What to carry
Water, snacks, a light waterproof jacket, shoes with grip, sunscreen, a small first-aid kit, a power bank and cash. Wear layers, because the weather changes fast at 2,500 metres. If you travel with an infant or a senior, carry any regular medicines and a warm blanket for the return drive.
Planning
These meadows suit slower itineraries, such as our 7-day Kashmir itinerary and the 6 nights, 7 days Jammu group tour. To include them in a custom route, tell us about your trip.
