Pahalgam sits where the Lidder river meets a spread of meadows and pine forest, about 95 km from Srinagar. It is a gentler place than Gulmarg or Sonamarg: more of a river valley than a mountaintop, with long walks beside the water, wide meadows and a slower rhythm. Many travellers say it is the place on a Kashmir trip where they finally relax.

What Pahalgam is known for

  • Betaab Valley, a green bowl just outside town, named after a Hindi film shot here in the early 1980s.
  • Aru Valley, a quiet village valley further up the Lidder and the starting point for treks to Kolahoi and the Tarsar and Marsar lakes.
  • Chandanwari, where the road ends and the Amarnath pilgrim route begins; snow often stays here into summer.
  • The Lidder river itself, with benches, walkways and cafes in the town, and shallow stretches that children enjoy.
  • Mamaleshwar Temple, an old Shiva temple close to the town centre.

Amarnath Yatra and your dates

Pahalgam is one of the two base points for the Amarnath Yatra, which runs for several weeks in July and August. The 2026 yatra ran from 3 July to 28 August. In those weeks hotels fill, roads are managed for pilgrim traffic and sightseeing can be slower. If you want a quiet stay, plan around the yatra: May, June and September to November are calmer. If you are travelling during it, book early and expect traffic advisories on the highway.

Local rules in Pahalgam

Sightseeing to Betaab Valley, Aru Valley and Chandanwari is done in local, registered vehicles, and ponies are used on some stretches. These are priced by the local unions and paid directly. Our quote lists them as exclusions so you can see the full picture. Some sites in the Pahalgam area, including the meadow at Baisaran, have had restricted access since 2025. We confirm what is open before including anything in your plan, and we suggest you check with your hotel or the district tourism office on arrival.

Where to stay

Hotels are spread along the main road and the riverbank. A riverside room is a good choice for couples; larger family groups tend to prefer hotels with their own restaurants and parking, since evening options are limited. Winter hotels are fewer, and heating and hot water are key to ask about from November to March.

How long to stay

One night is fine as a break between Srinagar and Sonamarg; two nights lets you do local sightseeing at an easy pace and keep a half day for a river walk. Four or five days in Pahalgam alone is enough for a trekker, but most travellers add it as a stop on a longer valley loop.

Evenings, food and pace

Pahalgam is a quiet town after dark, which is exactly why many people like it. Dinner is usually at the hotel, and the main market has a few simple restaurants serving trout, rajma-chawal, dum aloo and kahwa. The riverside path is pleasant after sunset in summer, and in winter the day is over by 5 pm, so a good heater and a good book matter more than nightlife. If you want more to do, the pony trails and the short Mamaleshwar and Lidder walks fill a gentle half-day.

Seasons in brief

  • April to June. Cool and green; a good time for families.
  • July to August. Lush, with showers; yatra crowds.
  • September to October. Clear and golden, our favourite for quiet sightseeing.
  • November to February. Snow, cold and a very peaceful valley, but fewer services.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are local union cabs and why are they not included?

In Pahalgam, Sonamarg and parts of Gulmarg, local sightseeing is done only by locally registered taxis and ponies, and outside vehicles are not permitted on those routes. Those charges are usually paid directly on the spot, so your package covers the journey to the town while these local legs stay separate. We list this clearly in every quote.

Is Kashmir safe for tourists?

Millions of domestic travellers visit each year and the main tourist circuits are busy through the season, but conditions can change, as the events of April 2025 showed. We follow current official advisories, avoid routes that are restricted, use experienced local drivers and tell you plainly what is open before you confirm. Read our safety guide for detail.

What is the best time to visit Kashmir?

It depends on what you want. April to June suits gardens, tulips and family sightseeing, July and August are good for high meadows, September and October bring clear skies and autumn colour, and December to February is the season for snow in Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam. Our best-time guide breaks this down month by month.
