Short answer
November to February is the best time for beaches, nightlife and comfortable weather, but also the busiest and most expensive. October and March are good compromises. June to September is the monsoon, with heavy rain, rough seas and closed shacks, but also lush scenery and low prices.

Goa has three seasons that matter to a traveller: a dry, cool peak from November to February, a hot and quiet stretch from March to May, and a rainy monsoon from June to September. October is the transition month. The right time depends on whether you want a classic beach holiday, a cheaper and quieter stay, or something different, such as green hills, waterfalls and Ayurveda.
Winter and peak season: November to February
This is the Goa of the postcards. Days are warm and dry, evenings are comfortable and the sea is calm. The beach shacks are open, water sports are in full swing and the nightlife scene is at its busiest. The period from about 20 December to the first week of January is the peak of the peak, with high prices, crowded roads and long waits at popular restaurants.
Good for: beach holidays, nightlife, honeymoons, festivals. Watch for: high rates, traffic, crowded beaches, the need to book early.
Summer: March to May
The heat builds from March and by May it is hot and humid, with daytime temperatures in the mid-30s. The sea is calm and the beaches are quieter. Some shacks begin to close from April, and many are dismantled by late May or early June. Hotels are cheaper, and resorts are good value if you want a pool-based holiday.
Good for: budget stays, quiet beaches, pool holidays. Watch for: heat and humidity in the afternoon, limited shack options by May.
Monsoon: June to September
Goa receives heavy rain, around 3,000 mm a year, most of it in these months. The sea is rough, swimming is unsafe, beach shacks are closed and water sports are suspended. But the state turns intensely green, waterfalls flow and hotel prices fall sharply. Spa and Ayurveda retreats, heritage visits, spice farms and cosy cafe days are the main appeal.
Good for: greenery, waterfalls, Ayurveda, low prices, quiet stays. Watch for: rain interrupting plans, closed beach facilities, limited water activities, travel delays on hill and rail routes.
October: the transition
Rain tapers off in early October, and the state is lush, humid and quiet. Shacks start reopening towards the end of the month, and water sports restart. Dussehra and Diwali bring local festivities. It is a good month for value, as long as you can accept some leftover showers and a few facilities still being set up.
Festivals that affect your trip
- Feast of St Francis Xavier (3 December) draws pilgrims and crowds to Old Goa.
- Christmas and New Year are the busiest weeks of the year.
- Goa Carnival in February or March brings parades and music to Panaji and other towns.
- Shigmo in March is a spring festival with processions and folk performances.
- Sao Joao (24 June) is celebrated in the monsoon, with villagers jumping into wells.
- Ganesh Chaturthi (Chavoth) in August or September is the most important family festival for many Goans.
Crowds and prices through the year
Prices and crowds track the weather closely. The peak runs from about 20 December to 5 January, with high rates, full beaches and long waits at restaurants. January and February remain busy but less intense. March and October are the best compromise, with good weather, open shacks and calmer streets. April and May are hot, quiet and cheap. June to September is the low season, with the lowest rates and the fewest tourists.
If your dates are fixed by school holidays, book early. Hotels in popular areas such as Candolim, Calangute and Palolem sell out first. If you are flexible, travelling midweek and avoiding long weekends can save money and reduce traffic.
Making the most of the monsoon
The monsoon is not for everyone, but it has real appeal if you set your expectations correctly. The countryside turns bright green, waterfalls fill, the spice farms are lush, and the Western Ghats look dramatic. Hotels offer deep discounts and Ayurveda centres run their best programmes. On the other hand, the sea is dangerous, most shacks are shut and heavy rain can leave you indoors for days. If you go, choose a hotel with a pool and good food, carry waterproofs and plan indoor and cultural activities.

- Nightlife, markets and festivals: December and January, with Carnival in February or March.
- Heritage sightseeing: November to February for comfort, though the churches are striking in the rain.

How to decide
- Decide whether you need open beaches and water sports. If yes, plan for October to May.
- Check whether your dates are fixed. If so, book early, especially for December and January.
- Think about your group. Families do well from November to February or shoulder months. Couples may prefer a quiet shoulder week.
- Decide your budget. The same hotel can cost three or four times as much in peak weeks as it does in the monsoon.

- For beach life with fewer crowds, aim for mid-October to mid-November or late February to March.
- Book hotels two to three months ahead for the Christmas to New Year period.
- Beach shacks and water sports usually run from October to late May or early June.
- In the monsoon, choose a hotel with a pool and do not plan sea swimming.
- Check festival dates, because Carnival, Shigmo and Christmas change traffic and prices.
