Short answer
April to June and September to October suit most travellers, with mild weather and open roads. Go in March or April for tulips and blossom, in July and August for high meadows, and between December and February for snow in Gulmarg.

There is no single best time for Kashmir, because the valley changes character with every season. The right question is what you want to see: flowers, meadows, golden leaves or snow. This guide takes each period in turn, and ends with a quick way to choose.
Spring: March to May
Spring brings almond blossom in March, cherry and apple blossom in April, and the opening of the Tulip Garden from roughly late March into April. Mornings are cold, afternoons are pleasant, and there can be rain. Snow still lies on the high peaks and sometimes at Gulmarg and Sonamarg, which makes for striking views. The Mughal Gardens are at their best in April and May.
Good for: gardens, photography, couples. Watch for: unpredictable showers, cold nights, and a short tulip window that shifts with the temperature.
Summer: June to August
June is the peak family season. Temperatures in Srinagar are warm but not harsh, the hill stations are cool and the meadows are green. Gulmarg has wildflowers, Pahalgam is lush and Sonamarg is fully open. July and August bring more rain, with landslide risk on some mountain roads, and the Amarnath Yatra fills Pahalgam and the road to Baltal.
Good for: families, trekking, long daylight. Watch for: high hotel rates in May and June, school-holiday crowds and monsoon-season road interruptions.
Autumn: September to November
September and October are calm, clear and, many people feel, the most pleasant months. Crowds thin, skies are crisp and the light is soft. From mid-October into November the chinar trees turn red-gold and the saffron fields around Pampore bloom for a short period. Nights turn cold in November and the first snow can arrive.
Good for: quiet sightseeing, photography, couples, culture. Watch for: cooler evenings, an early shift to winter hours for some sites.
Winter: December to February
Winter turns Kashmir into a snow destination. Gulmarg is the centre, with the Gondola, skiing and sledging, and Sonamarg and Pahalgam also see snow. The lake edges may freeze, nights are well below zero, and hotels use heaters and electric blankets. Crowds peak at the end of December and in January, and some activities depend on weather.
Good for: snow, skiing, winter honeymoons. Watch for: road closures, flight delays, cold-related health issues for elders. The Sonamarg tunnel, opened in January 2025, keeps that approach more reliable than before, but snow can still delay travel.
Events and festivals through the year
Timing a trip to an event can lift it, and ignoring one can leave you stuck in traffic.
- March to April. The tulip season begins, almond blossom fades into cherry and apple blossom, and spring festivals bring families to the gardens.
- May to June. School holidays and peak family travel. Evenings are lively in Srinagar and Pahalgam.
- July and August. The Amarnath Yatra brings pilgrims through Pahalgam and Baltal, with traffic management on the highway and full hotels. The 2026 yatra ran from 3 July to 28 August.
- September to October. The calmest period for sightseeing and a good time for food, markets and quiet drives.
- Late October to early November. Saffron blooms near Pampore for a short window and chinar trees turn red-gold across Srinagar.
- December to February. Skiing and winter sports at Gulmarg, along with festive-season crowds at the end of December.
Religious festivals such as Eid and Muharram can affect shop timings and traffic in the old city. If your dates overlap, ask your planner what to expect.
Crowds, prices and when to book
Prices and crowds follow the same pattern. May and June, and the last week of December, are the busiest and most expensive periods, with good hotels, houseboats and Gulmarg slots selling out early. April, September, October and early March are in between. July and August are cheaper in Srinagar but not in Pahalgam, because of the yatra. November and early December are quiet, though winter weather can disrupt plans.
As a rule, book peak-season trips six to eight weeks ahead, shoulder-season trips three to four weeks ahead, and keep the Gulmarg Gondola for a flexible slot. If you are booking late, tell your planner what you can bend on: dates, hotel category or route.
Matching the season to your group
Families with school-age children usually travel in May and June, and benefit most from booking early. Couples tend to prefer April, October or the snow months. Senior travellers do best in late April to June or September to October, when days are mild. Groups and corporate trips avoid July and August around Pahalgam and look at September or March. Photographers can choose three windows: the tulip bloom, the autumn chinar colour and the winter frost.

Practical tips
- Book hotels and the Gulmarg Gondola early for May, June and the last week of December.
- Keep one buffer day on any winter trip; snow and fog change flight and road timings.
- If tulips are your main reason to visit, plan at least three nights in Srinagar in late March to mid-April.
- Pahalgam fills up during the Amarnath Yatra in July and August; book earlier or choose another month.
- Carry a warm layer even in June; the hills are cool at any time of year.
