Five days is the minimum for Darjeeling and Gangtok, and it requires accepting that you will leave things out. This itinerary uses two bases, Darjeeling and Gangtok, with just one long drive between them, so you spend more time looking than travelling.

Who it suits: couples, friends and families who want a short mountain break. What it leaves out: Kalimpong, Pelling and North Sikkim. For those, see the 7-day itinerary.

Seasonal tweaks: from March to May and October to early December the plan is as written. In winter, nights are cold and Tsomgo may be snowed in. In the monsoon, we recommend a different plan.

How the days are balanced. Day 1 is the drive to Darjeeling. Day 2 is sunrise, the Toy Train and a tea estate. Day 3 is the drive to Gangtok. Day 4 is the Tsomgo excursion. Day 5 is departure. Do not schedule an early flight on Day 5, because the road can be slow.

What each day gives you. The first evening is about arrival and tea, the second day about views and heritage, and the fourth about high-altitude scenery, so the trip has a clear shape even though it is short. Making the most of it. Start early, since mornings are clearer, and keep the afternoons slow. Getting around. A private car links everything. Want a version priced for your dates? Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do I need for Darjeeling and Sikkim?

Six to eight days is a comfortable minimum for Darjeeling and Gangtok with a day trip to Tsomgo Lake. Add two days for Pelling and two or three for North Sikkim. Hill roads are slow, so five days leaves little time to enjoy each place, and trying to see everything in four is mostly driving.

Will I see Kanchenjunga from Darjeeling?

Clear views depend entirely on the weather. October to early December and March to April offer the best chances, usually at sunrise, but cloud can hide the peak at any time. We plan more than one morning at a viewpoint and never promise a clear view, since no honest operator can.

What is the best time to visit Darjeeling and Sikkim?

March to May and October to early December are the best months, with comfortable temperatures and the clearest chances of seeing Kanchenjunga. Spring brings rhododendron blooms, and autumn brings crisp views. June to September is the monsoon, with heavy rain and landslide risk. December to February is cold, with snow at higher places such as Tsomgo and North Sikkim.
