Route: Bagdogra - Darjeeling - Pelling - Gangtok - Bagdogra
Places covered: Darjeeling, Tiger Hill, Pelling, Pemayangtse Monastery, Khecheopalri Lake, Gangtok, Rumtek Monastery, Tsomgo Lake
This plan is built for couples. It uses three bases, spends two nights in Darjeeling, two in Pelling and three in Gangtok, and chooses hotels for views, privacy and comfort over convenience. It includes two long drives, and we say so up front.
Who it suits
Honeymooners and couples celebrating an anniversary, who like scenery, tea gardens and monasteries, and who are happy with a slower pace. It works best from March to May and October to early December. In winter, it is cold but beautiful. In the monsoon, we do not recommend it.
How the days flow
You land at Bagdogra and drive to Darjeeling, spending two nights there with Tiger Hill, the Toy Train and a tea estate. On day three, you drive to Pelling, about five hours, and settle into a hotel with a view. Day four is for Pemayangtse, Rabdentse and Khecheopalri Lake. On day five, you drive to Gangtok, about five to six hours. Day six is Tsomgo Lake, subject to permits and weather. Day seven is for Rumtek, the ropeway and a quiet evening. Day eight is departure.
What makes it romantic
- A heritage hotel in Darjeeling with a fireplace and tea served at dusk.
- A room in Pelling facing Kanchenjunga.
- A first-flush tea tasting among the terraces.
- Monasteries, prayer flags and quiet forest paths.
- Gangtok's MG Marg in the evening, lit and relaxed.
- A candlelit dinner, flowers in the room or a photographer on request.
The honest part
- The drives from Darjeeling to Pelling and from Pelling to Gangtok are long. We start early and break them with lunch and viewpoints.
- Kanchenjunga may be hidden by cloud at any time of year.
- Tsomgo Lake and Nathu La depend on permits, weather and nationality.
- Weekends are crowded in Darjeeling and Gangtok.
- Hotels in the hills vary in standard. We choose carefully and share photographs in advance.
A word on pace
Couples often tell us they wish they had done less. Two nights in each place is the minimum for a honeymoon, and we would rather you spend a slow afternoon on a balcony with a pot of tea than rush to a fifth viewpoint. Mornings are for views, afternoons for rest, and evenings for dinner, which gives the trip a gentle rhythm.
Customising
Replace Pelling with Kalimpong, add a Lachung extension, upgrade to a heritage hotel or add a photographer. Tell us your dates and the mood you want, and we will adapt the plan.
