Route: Bagdogra - Gangtok - Lachen - Lachung - Gangtok - Bagdogra
Places covered: Gangtok, Mangan, Lachen, Gurudongmar Lake, Lachung, Yumthang Valley, Zero Point
North Sikkim is the most dramatic part of the state, and also the most unpredictable. This plan is for travellers who accept that access depends on permits, roads and weather, and who are prepared to change the route if needed. It spends time in Gangtok at both ends to acclimatise and to give us a buffer.
Who it suits
Healthy, adventurous travellers, mostly couples and groups of friends. It works best in April and May for rhododendrons, and from October to November for clear skies. It is not recommended in the monsoon. It is not suitable for young children or people with heart, lung or blood-pressure conditions.
How the days flow
You arrive at Bagdogra and drive to Gangtok. A day in Gangtok follows, for rest and local sightseeing, or Tsomgo Lake if permitted. On day three, you drive to Lachen via Mangan, about six to seven hours. On day four, Indian citizens may leave before dawn for Gurudongmar Lake, subject to permits and conditions, then drive on to Lachung. Day five is for Yumthang Valley and Zero Point. On day six, you return to Gangtok, and day seven is departure.
Permits and who can go
Indian citizens need Protected Area Permits for Lachen, Lachung, Yumthang and Gurudongmar. Foreign nationals have faced stricter rules and have been limited to certain places, with Gurudongmar closed to them. Permit rules change, and the system has moved towards online, QR-based permits. We confirm the current position before quoting, and offer alternatives such as Pelling or Tsomgo if North Sikkim is closed.
The honest part
- Roads. North Sikkim has been hit by floods and landslides in recent years. Closures can last days. We keep spare time and follow official advice.
- Altitude. Gurudongmar is above 5,400 metres, and Zero Point about 4,700. Altitude sickness is a real risk. Gurudongmar is the most demanding, and we advise skipping it if anyone is unwell.
- Facilities. Lodges in Lachen and Lachung are simple, with limited hot water and heating.
- Connectivity. Mobile coverage is poor, and there are no ATMs.
- Cold. Temperatures fall below freezing at night, even in spring.
What to carry
Warm layers, waterproofs, sturdy shoes, gloves, a woollen cap, sunglasses, sunscreen, medicines, snacks, cash and a power bank.
Customising
Drop Gurudongmar and add a night in Pelling, spend a second night in Gangtok, or add Tsomgo Lake. Tell us your dates and we will check the current position.
