Patnitop is a small hill resort about 110 km from Jammu, at roughly 2,000 metres, set among deodar and pine trees. It is the sort of place people stop at for a night and end up remembering: cool air, a gentle pace and views over forested ridges. For many travellers on the Jammu to Srinagar road, it breaks the long drive.

What to do

  • Walk in the forest. Quiet trails lead through pine groves to viewpoints. Early morning is lovely.
  • Visit Nathatop. A higher viewpoint, a short drive away, with open views and, in winter, snow.
  • Add Sanasar. A small meadow with a lake, popular for paragliding in good conditions.
  • Try local activities. Horse rides, a short ropeway and picnic spots are available in season.
  • Relax. Patnitop does not demand a schedule. Evening tea and a good book are enough.

Seasons

April to June is fresh and green and temperatures are comfortable while the plains are hot. July and August bring rain and mist. September and October are clear and calm. December to February often brings snow, which draws crowds at weekends, and conditions can shut the road.

Getting there

Patnitop is on the national highway between Jammu and Srinagar, roughly three hours from Jammu and about two hours from Udhampur. From Katra it is around 100 km by road. Travelling by cab, you can stop here for lunch, or stay overnight to split the drive.

Stay options

Patnitop has a small number of hotels and resorts. Book ahead in winter and during holidays, as capacity is limited. Ask about heating and hot water, particularly outside summer.

What to expect from the weather and the road

Patnitop sits on a ridge, so mist rolls in quickly, even on a clear morning, and temperatures can drop sharply after dark. In winter, snow and ice make the approach slow, and the national highway can be closed for hours. Carry warm layers year-round, keep a torch and charged phone, and let your driver decide whether to continue after dark. Fuel and basic supplies are available at small shops along the way.

Is it worth staying?

If you are driving between Jammu and Srinagar and have the time, yes. A night here makes the road journey easier and gives a different mountain experience. If you are short on days, a lunch and viewpoint stop is sufficient.

Plan it into your trip

Patnitop is a good addition to a Jammu-to-Jammu loop, or to a trip combining Katra and the Vaishno Devi yatra with the Valley. See our guide to Jammu, Katra and Patnitop or ask us to build it into your route.
