Anjuna Beach has an easygoing character that sets it apart from Baga or Calangute. The shore is a mix of sand, rocks and tide pools, shacks line the upper edge, and the cliffs behind give the beach a rough, scenic quality. It is popular with long-stay travellers, groups of friends and anyone who prefers a creative, informal atmosphere.

What you will find

The beach is not a long, even stretch of sand like some in the north. It has rocky patches, some wide sandy sections and a few spots where waves break against stone. Swimming is possible at the sandier spots but the water can be choppy, especially in the evening. The sunsets are excellent, and sunset gatherings at the beach cafes are part of the Anjuna routine.

The Wednesday flea market

Held weekly in season, the Anjuna Flea Market is one of Goa's best-known. Stalls sell clothing, jewellery, home goods, handicrafts, spices and souvenirs, with some food and live music. It can be crowded, bargaining is expected and quality varies. Go early to avoid the heat and the midday crowds, carry cash and keep an eye on your bag.

Things to do

  • Watch the sunset from a clifftop cafe.
  • Walk the shoreline at low tide, but beware of slippery rocks.
  • Visit the market on a Wednesday.
  • Have a long, slow lunch at a beachside restaurant.
  • Try a yoga or breathwork class offered by local studios.
  • Explore nearby Vagator and Chapora.

Tips for a better visit

Arrive before 4 pm to find a good sunset spot, and bring a layer for the evening breeze. Cafes on the cliff edge fill up quickly, so book or get there early. Carry small change for the flea market, and bargain politely. Avoid walking on rocks after dark, and be careful if you swim near rocky patches.

Safety

The sea at Anjuna can be rough, especially around rocky areas. Swim only where it is clearly safe and obey lifeguard flags. Do not leave belongings unattended, and be careful with unlicensed vendors. Night parties and late-night venues should be chosen with care, and fire-safety rules have been tightened across Goa.

When to go

November to February is the main season, and the market is most active then. In the monsoon, the sea is rough and most shacks close.

Plan it with us

Anjuna fits into a North Goa stay or a combined plan with Vagator and Chapora. See the Goa beach escape or tell us what you want from your trip.

Helpful answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Is nightlife in Goa safe?

It can be enjoyable if you take sensible precautions. After a fatal nightclub fire in Arpora in December 2025, the state tightened fire-safety enforcement. Choose licensed venues that look well managed, note the exits when you arrive, avoid overcrowded spaces, keep an eye on your drinks and belongings and arrange your ride back in advance.

Is it safe to rent a scooter in Goa?

Many visitors do, but accidents are common. Rent only if you are experienced, hold a valid licence, wear a helmet, avoid riding after dark or after drinking and inspect the bike and the rental agreement carefully. If you are unsure, a cab for the day is a better choice and usually costs less than you expect once fuel and fines are counted.
