Route: Chandigarh - Shimla - Manali - Chandigarh
Places covered: Chandigarh, Shimla, Kufri, Manali, Solang Valley, Atal Tunnel, Kullu
This is the best-known Himachal route, and for good reason. It combines Shimla's colonial charm with Manali's mountain scenery and adventure, in a loop that starts and ends at Chandigarh. It suits couples, families and groups who have a week and want the highlights without too much driving.
Who it suits
First-time visitors to Himachal, honeymooners, families with children and groups of friends. It works from March to June, September to November and in winter for snow. In July and August, we adapt the route and keep buffer days, because of landslide risk on the highways.
How the days flow
You arrive in Chandigarh and drive to Shimla for two nights, with the Ridge, Mall Road, Jakhoo Temple and a trip to Kufri. On day three, you drive to Manali, about seven to eight hours, with a stop at Kullu or a viewpoint. The next three days are in Manali: Solang Valley, the Atal Tunnel and Sissu, Hadimba Temple, Old Manali, and a rest day. The seventh day is the drive back to Chandigarh, about eight to nine hours.
Why this route works, and what to watch
The route follows a natural geography, with Shimla first and Manali later. The long Shimla to Manali drive is the main challenge; we start early and take breaks. If you prefer a gentler journey, we can break it with a night at Mandi or Kullu or shorten the plan by dropping a Manali night. On the way back, the highway can be slow because of traffic or landslides, so keep your onward flight for the next day.
Things to know
- The Kalka to Shimla toy train is optional and can be added as an alternative to the car.
- Rohtang Pass is open only in season and needs a permit; the Atal Tunnel route to Sissu is easier.
- Local union taxis are used in Manali for Solang and Rohtang, paid directly.
- Adventure activities are optional and charged separately.
- Winter nights are cold, and heating is essential.
What a typical day feels like
You wake to mountain air, have a relaxed breakfast and set out around 9 am for one main outing. Lunch is long, and the afternoon is for a walk, a market or a rest. By dusk you are back at the hotel for tea, and dinner is early. Long drive days start earlier and have more stops. The idea is a steady rhythm, with no day so packed that it spoils the next.
Customising
