Route: Shimla - Kalpa - Nako - Tabo - Kaza - Chandratal - Manali
Places covered: Shimla, Kalpa, Nako, Tabo, Kaza, Key Monastery, Kibber, Chandratal, Manali
This is a demanding trip for travellers who want landscapes, silence and a sense of adventure. It follows the classic circuit, going up the Sutlej valley through Kinnaur and into Spiti, then crossing Kunzum Pass to Manali. The route is arranged to gain altitude gradually and avoid rushing, which makes it safer and more enjoyable than the quick itineraries often advertised.
Who it suits
Fit, flexible travellers aged from late teens to mid sixties, groups of friends and adventurous couples. It runs only in the summer window, roughly mid-June to early October, when both routes are open. It is not suitable for people with serious heart, lung or blood pressure conditions, pregnant travellers or small children.
How the days flow
Day one is Shimla to Kalpa in Kinnaur, a long drive with views of the Sutlej gorge. Day two continues to Nako, where the lake and village sit at over 3,600 metres. Day three goes through Tabo, with its ancient monastery, to Kaza. Day four is a local day around Key, Kibber and Langza. Day five visits Dhankar and Pin Valley, or goes towards Chandratal. Day six is Chandratal via Kunzum Pass, and day seven is Manali.
Altitude and health
Altitude is the main risk. The itinerary spends nights at 2,800, 3,600, 3,000 and 3,800 metres, to help the body adjust. You will be advised to drink water, avoid alcohol, rest on arrival and report any symptoms. A vehicle with an oxygen cylinder is not a substitute for acclimatisation. If someone shows serious symptoms, we descend. Carry any prescribed medicines and consult your doctor before the trip.
Facilities and expectations
Accommodation is in homestays and simple hotels, with basic bathrooms, limited hot water and shared facilities in some places. Food is simple but filling. Mobile coverage is patchy, power cuts occur and ATMs are scarce. These are part of the Spiti experience, and we are open about them.
Roads and weather
Roads are narrow and can be affected by landslides, washouts and snow at passes, even in summer. Delays are normal. We keep buffer time, and the order of days may change. Kunzum Pass is at over 4,500 metres and can close at short notice.
Customising
Extend with an extra day in Kaza, add Chitkul and Sangla, reverse the direction or choose a longer stay. Tell us your dates and your experience with altitude, and we will advise on feasibility.
