Route: Srinagar - Gulmarg - Srinagar - Sonamarg (optional) - Srinagar
Places covered: Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Dal Lake
Snow is the reason most people come to Kashmir in winter, and this plan is built around it. It puts Gulmarg first, uses a Srinagar base for warmth and comfort, and keeps one day free so you are not at the mercy of one weather window.
When it works best
Late December to February gives the most reliable snow, and January is usually the coldest and snowiest month. March can still have good snow in Gulmarg, with fewer crowds. Early December and late March are possible but less certain, and we tell you honestly what to expect for your dates.
Why a night in Gulmarg
Gulmarg is two hours from Srinagar and often cold, crowded and slow on the road at midday. Staying one night in the meadow gives you an early start for the gondola, easier access to snow activities and the unusual quiet of a snowy evening. The trade-off is simple rooms and limited choice, so we book early.
What to expect
- Cold. Night temperatures often fall below freezing in Srinagar and much lower in Gulmarg. Hotels provide heating, but ask which kind, whether a room heater, a bukhari or central heating, because comfort and safety differ.
- Road delays. Snow clearing can take hours. A buffer day absorbs that.
- Gondola uncertainty. Phase 2 may be closed for wind. Phase 1 and snow activities remain.
- Short days. Sunset is early, and driving after dark on snowy roads is avoided.
Is this plan right for you?
It suits people who actually want cold weather: couples on a winter honeymoon, families seeing snow for the first time and friends who want to try sledging or a first ski lesson. It is not ideal for anyone who dislikes the cold, has respiratory or heart conditions, or needs a fixed schedule. If a rigid return date matters, add a spare day at the end. If your priority is the Gondola, we suggest booking the earliest slot and keeping the afternoon open.
What to pack
Thermals, a waterproof jacket, insulated gloves, a woollen cap, snow boots with grip and sunglasses. Read what to wear in Kashmir for details.
If you are travelling with children or elders, tell us, because we may suggest a lower-altitude base and shorter outings. Share your dates and we will check the snow outlook and hotel availability before recommending a final plan.
