Route: Kochi - Munnar - Thekkady - Alleppey - Kovalam - Thiruvananthapuram
Places covered: Kochi, Fort Kochi, Munnar, Eravikulam, Thekkady, Periyar, Alleppey, Kovalam
This is the classic first trip to Kerala, and the one we recommend if you have eight days. It links the state's four big experiences in a single south-bound line: colonial Kochi, the tea and spice hills, the backwaters and the beach. Because it ends at a different airport from where it starts, you never retrace your steps.
Who it suits
Couples and families with a week, first-time visitors who want the highlights and travellers who like a mix of culture, nature and rest. It works best from September to March. In the monsoon, we keep the same route but adjust activities, and we check hill road advisories before departure.
How the days flow
You begin with a night in Fort Kochi, with heritage walks and a Kathakali demonstration. The next day brings the climb to Munnar for two nights, with tea estates and Eravikulam. Day four is a spice-country drive to Thekkady for a night, with the Periyar lake boat ride and a plantation visit. Day five takes you down to Alleppey for a houseboat cruise, with a night on the water. Days six and seven are spent in Kovalam, with the beach, an Ayurveda session and a free day. The last day is departure from Thiruvananthapuram.
Why this route works
It follows the geography: hills in the middle, backwaters on the lower plain, beaches in the south. Each leg is three to four hours, and no two long legs fall on consecutive days. The houseboat night is placed after the hills, when you want to slow down, and the beach is saved for the end.
Honest notes
- The Munnar and Thekkady roads are winding; carry motion sickness tablets if needed.
- The houseboat is a great experience but basic by hotel standards; we choose boats with proper classification and describe the cabin in the quote.
- Monsoon rain can affect the hills, beaches and some activities.
- Entry tickets, boat rides and performances are paid separately unless added to your quote.
What a typical day feels like
Mornings begin with a relaxed breakfast, then a drive or activity in the cooler hours. Lunch is long, followed by rest, and the late afternoon is for a walk, a boat or a market. Evenings are for dinner and conversation. Drives never take up more than half a day, so you arrive with energy.
Customising
Swap Thekkady for Wayanad, add a night in Munnar, replace Kovalam with Varkala, extend to Kumarakom or add an Ayurveda programme. Tell us what you would like and we will price it.
