Route: Jodhpur - Jaisalmer - Sam Sand Dunes - Jodhpur

Places covered: Jodhpur, Mehrangarh Fort, Jaisalmer, Jaisalmer Fort, Sam Sand Dunes

If you are drawn to landscape more than bazaars, this is the Rajasthan plan for you. It focuses on two cities in the west, Jodhpur and Jaisalmer, with a night in the Thar Desert. It is quieter and less hurried than the full circuit, and good for friends, couples and photographers.

Who it suits

Travellers who want a shorter trip with a strong sense of place: fort, desert, camels, folk music and stars. It works from October to March. In summer, temperatures are extreme, and we do not recommend it.

How the days flow

You fly or take a train into Jodhpur, and spend two nights there, with Mehrangarh Fort, the old city and a morning walk in the blue lanes. On day three you drive to Jaisalmer, about five hours, visiting the fort and havelis. Day four is the desert: a camel ride, sunset on the dunes, folk music and a night in a camp. Day five takes you back to Jodhpur, with a stop at a village or heritage hotel on the way. Day six is departure.

What makes it distinctive

  • Mehrangarh at sunset, and the old city rooftops at dawn.
  • A living fort at Jaisalmer, with lanes, shops and temples.
  • A desert night, which many travellers say they remember most.
  • Fewer hotel changes than the full circuit and a calmer pace.

Responsible notes

Jaisalmer's fort faces conservation pressures, so we suggest staying outside the walls. We choose desert camps with proper facilities and avoid operators that run noisy motorised dune activities. Camels should be treated well; we help you choose ethical providers.

Practical notes

  • Winter nights in the desert are cold, so we ask you to pack warm layers.
  • Camel rides, jeep safaris and monument tickets are paid separately.
  • Phone coverage can be patchy at the camp.
  • Alcohol may be served at some camps, but rules vary.

Who might prefer a different plan

If you want shopping, restaurants and a city feel, our Jaipur and Udaipur plan is a better match. If you have young children or elderly relatives, the long desert drives may be too much, and the Golden Triangle or the family plan with Ranthambore would be gentler. If you are travelling in summer, we suggest a different destination or a shorter trip based in Udaipur.

Customising

Add Udaipur by flight or road, include Pushkar, extend to Bikaner, or upgrade to luxury tents. Share your dates and we will price the plan.

Helpful answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a night in a desert camp worth it?

It can be a highlight if you choose carefully. A camp near Sam or Khuri gives sunset on the dunes, folk music and a night sky, but some camps are crowded and loud. Ask about the tent type, bathrooms, distance from the main dune stretch and noise policies, and avoid camps that offer motor-vehicle dune bashing.

Can I visit Rajasthan in summer?

You can, but it is hard. Daytime temperatures in May and June regularly pass 40 degrees, and forts and open-air sites become uncomfortable by late morning. If you must travel then, plan sightseeing before 10 am and after 4 pm, stay at hotels with a pool and consider Udaipur or Mount Abu, which are slightly cooler.

Can I drink alcohol in Rajasthan?

Alcohol is available in licensed hotels, bars and shops across most of the state. Pushkar and some religious towns are alcohol-free, and drinking in public places is not allowed. Drink-driving is strictly enforced, so arrange a driver, particularly on highways at night.
