Panaji is Goa's capital and the base for its heritage sightseeing. Old Goa, about 10 km east, holds the churches and convents inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, while Fontainhas in Panaji itself preserves the colour-washed houses of the old Latin Quarter.
Getting around
Panaji is roughly 30 km from Dabolim Airport and around 15 km from the Calangute belt, so the heritage sights work well as a half-day or full-day trip from a beach base. Old Goa's main churches are close enough together to walk between.
Good to know
The Old Goa churches are active places of worship as well as monuments. Modest dress covering shoulders and knees is expected, and photography rules vary between buildings.
