Kufri sits about 16 km from Shimla at roughly 2,500 metres, on a ridge surrounded by deodar and pine. It is a small settlement with a long history as a winter playground: the British came here to ski, and today it is where Shimla's visitors go to see snow. In summer it turns into a green day-trip spot with horse rides, viewpoints and a nature park.
Winter: the snow trip
From December to February, Kufri sees snowfall in most years, and the slopes fill with visitors from Shimla and the plains. Activities include walking in the snow, sledging, snowball fights and pony rides. Prices for local services and the number of people rise on snow days. The road from Shimla can be crowded, icy and slow, so plan an early start and keep time in hand.
Summer: green and open
From March to June, Kufri is green and breezy, a cool escape from the heat. The slopes are used for horse riding, and there are small adventure activities such as zip-lining and bungee in some seasons. The air is fresh, and the views of forested valleys and distant peaks are good on clear days.
What to see and do
- The Himalayan Nature Park. A forest reserve with enclosures for Himalayan wildlife, such as the Himalayan monal, deer, bears and leopards, set along walking trails. It is a good family stop, though animals can be hard to spot.
- Horse rides. Rides up to viewpoints such as Mahasu Peak are popular. Agree the price and check the animal's health.
- Mahasu Peak. A forested viewpoint above Kufri with panoramic views, reached by a short walk or ride.
- Fun World. A small amusement park, popular with children.
- Walks. Gentle paths through the forest, away from the main stalls.
Responsible visiting
Some activities in Kufri, such as animal rides and cramped enclosures, raise welfare concerns. Choose horse owners who treat their animals well, avoid overloaded rides and consider walking instead. Do not litter, particularly on the slopes. Support local families by buying hot drinks and snacks.
Practical tips
- Start early to beat crowds and traffic.
- Wear waterproof boots, gloves and warm layers in winter.
- Rent snow boots and jackets only from reputable stalls, and check fit.
- Agree prices for rides before you start.
- Keep children warm, and watch them near slopes.
- Carry water and snacks; prices on the slopes are high.
- Check road conditions, since heavy snow can close the road.
Getting there
Kufri is a 45-minute drive from Shimla in normal conditions, longer on snow days. Taxis are available, and most hotels can arrange a car. Parking is limited, and you may walk the last stretch.
Is it worth it?
In winter, yes, if you want to see snow and do not mind crowds. In summer, it is a pleasant half-day. If you only have a short time in Shimla, the Mall and Jakhoo may give you more atmosphere.
