Seven days allows a proper circuit of Kerala's main experiences without hurrying. This plan runs south from Kochi through the hills and spice country to the backwaters, and ends on the beach at Kovalam. It leaves out Wayanad and the north, which need extra days.

Who it suits: couples, families with older children and travellers who enjoy variety. Pace: three longer drive days (2, 4 and 6) and four lighter days. Seasonal tweaks: from September to March the plan is as written. In the monsoon, check road advisories for Munnar and Thekkady, and be ready to shorten the hill sections. During Onam, book early.

What each day gives you. The first two days are about heritage and hills, the middle days about spice country and the lake, and the last days about water and sea, which gives the week a clear arc. Making it easier. Start sightseeing early and plan rest in the afternoons. If you dislike long drives, drop Thekkady and give Munnar an extra night. If you want a calmer finish, spend two nights at one beach resort.

This is the route of our Classic Kerala tour, shortened by a day. For a slower pace, ask us to remove a stop.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do I need for Kerala?

Six or seven days covers Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady and a backwater night without rushing. Five days works if you choose two bases, such as Munnar and Alleppey. Adding the southern beaches at Kovalam or Varkala, or Wayanad, needs eight or nine days, because the road legs are slower than they look on a map.

Is it worth visiting Kerala in the monsoon?

Yes, for the right trip. Heavy rain brings green hills, waterfalls and the traditional Ayurveda season, with lower hotel rates. But landslides can close hill roads, beaches may be unsafe for swimming, and some activities are cancelled. Choose resort-based stays, keep your plans flexible and check district advisories before travelling to Munnar or Wayanad.

Is Kerala suitable for children and senior travellers?

Yes, with a measured pace. Long hill drives with many bends can cause motion sickness, so break journeys and carry medicines. Houseboats suit families, but check life jackets and safety rails. Seniors do well in Kumarakom and beach resorts, where stays are calm and accessible.
